CTOnews.com The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said yesterday that many owners complained that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUV completely or partially lost propulsion, and many people also heard a loud crack before the problem appeared.

Hyundai Motor has confirmed the existence of the problem and said it will provide software updates starting next month and replace affected components for owners if necessary.

NHTSA said it had received 30 complaints about 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUVs and that NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigations had launched a preliminary investigation. Hyundai said after a preliminary review that the surge may have damaged the transistor, causing the vehicle's 12-volt battery to fail to charge.

Hyundai spokesman Ira Gabriel said the company is fully cooperating with the investigation and will launch a service campaign in July to update the software of affected vehicles and replace integrated control charging units for owners if necessary.

CTOnews.com previously reported that the IONIQ 5 electric SUV is the first production model of IONIQ, the exclusive brand of modern electric vehicles, and debuted in China in the first half of 2021.
