SK Hynix is said to be considering plans to double HBM capacity, given the increased demand for artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.

According to industry sources, SK Hynix received a request for HBM3E samples from NVIDIA on June 14 and is preparing for shipment. HBM3E is the next generation of the highest specification DRAM HBM3 currently available and is known as the fifth generation semiconductor products.

SK Hynix is currently working on the product and aims to achieve mass production in the first half of next year. "We are preparing samples of 8Gbps HBM3E products for the second half of this year and plan to achieve mass production in the first half of next year," Park Mingxiu, vice president of SK Hynix, said on the first quarter earnings call in April this year.

CTOnews.com inquiry found that SK Hynix has been ahead of Samsung Electronics in the HBM market. As of last year, SK Hynix had 50 per cent of the global HBM market, while Samsung Electronics remained at around 40 per cent, according to market research firm TrendForce.

Last June, SK Hynix became the first company in the world to mass-produce high-performance HBM3, thus establishing its market leadership position. After passing the rigorous performance evaluation of HBM3 samples, we have successfully met the needs of high-end customers and are already supplying NVIDIA H100.

If they successfully deliver the fifth generation HBM products, they will further consolidate their leading position in the ultra-fast AI semiconductor market.
