CTOnews.com, June 16 (Xinhua)-- Southeast Asian countries are drafting norms and ethics for artificial intelligence (AI) governance and ethics to set up a "guardrail" for this booming technology, five sources recently told Reuters.

Ministers from 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed in February to develop an ASEAN version of ▲ guidelines for the region's population of 668 million, but previous reports did not cover details of discussions among regional policy makers.

Officials from Southeast Asian countries said ASEAN was drafting AI guidelines and would try to balance the economic benefits of the technology with its many risks: "drafting is under way and may be completed by the end of the year before it will be accepted by ASEAN member countries." Another official said that after the draft is completed, it may be formally announced at the ASEAN digital ministerial meeting early next year.

A spokesman for Singapore Communications and the Department of Public Information said that as chair of the 2024 meeting, Singapore would work with other ASEAN countries to develop an ASEAN AI Governance and Ethics Guide and see it as a practical option to support the deployment of responsible and innovative AI technologies in the ASEAN region.

Singapore has been at the forefront of the AI strategy in the ASEAN region and is leading negotiations on the contents of the AI guidelines, according to three sources.

CTOnews.com previously reported that the European Union and the United States are expected to release a draft voluntary AI code of conduct within weeks, while Japan and South Korea are also considering their own AI regulatory bills.
