Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, June 16-A team of New Zealand security experts from CyberCX demonstrated a way to easily access notebooks with BIOS passwords through a screwdriver and short-circuited EEPROM chip pins.

CyberCX demonstrated on several discontinued Lenovo notebooks, including the Lenovo ThinkPad L440 launched in the fourth quarter of 2013 and the Lenovo ThinkPad X230 launched in the third quarter of 2012.

Other laptop and desktop models and brands that use separate EEPROM chips may be equally vulnerable.

After disassembling the Lenovo ThinkPad L440 laptop, security experts find the chip labeled L08-1 X, and then use a screwdriver, short-circuit SCL and SDA chip pins to reset or disable password requirements.

CyberCX said that this cracking technology is not very suitable for modern notebooks with surface mount devices (SMD) in BIOS and EEPROM packages, which require "off-chip attack."
