On the morning of June 16, Beijing time, it was reported that Disney announced on Thursday that its chief financial officer, Christian McCarthy (Christine McCarthy), would resign from the post.

The company said she would take sick leave and recuperate at home, during which time she would continue to serve as the company's strategic consultant.

In addition, McCarthy will help find a successor. Kevin Lansbury, a senior executive who currently serves as Disneyland's chief financial officer, will serve as the company's interim chief financial officer from July 1.

McCarthy said at a news conference announcing his departure: "I am infinitely grateful to Bob for giving me the opportunity to be the chief financial officer of this iconic company. I am proud of the talented team. The work they have done has enabled Disney to take full advantage of future business opportunities."

McCarthy joined Disney in 2000 and became chief financial officer in 2015. The departure comes at a time when Mr Iger is in his second term as chief executive and Disney is undergoing a major restructuring. In several rounds of layoffs this year, the company aims to cut 7000 jobs.

Disney is competing with media companies for a tougher advertising market and is trying to gain a foothold in the highly competitive streaming sector. In the second quarter, Disney reported an operating loss of $659 million (currently about 4.699 billion yuan) directly to its consumer division.

During McCarthy's tenure, Disney's streaming spending soared and free cash flow fell. For a while, the situation was good. Disney's share price also rose as the number of Disney + subscribers soared. But when streaming valuations soared in 2022, she needed to change her strategy. At present, this work is still in progress.

In Disney's upheaval last year, Robert Allen Iger replaced Bob Bob Chapek as chief executive, and McCarthy became a key figure. During her tenure at Chapec, she entered the heart of the company, but she reportedly betrayed Chapek and turned out to be the last straw to overwhelm the former chief executive.

But Iger has loyal supporters in the company, and McCarthy's previous shift to Cupac shows that she is not in the camp of Iger supporters. As a result, her position within the company has never been trusted by Iger like others, according to people familiar with the matter.

However, Iger took a positive view of McCarthy in a statement on Thursday.

In a press release, Iger said: "what I admire most about her many contributions to the company is that over the years, she has provided generous guidance to many colleagues, including countless women. She opened the door, created opportunities, and set an example for women at all levels of business-not just at Disney, but around the world."
