Officials say the Tunnel Falls is the most advanced silicon spin qubit chip ever developed by Intel, taking advantage of decades of transistor design and manufacturing capabilities built by Intel.

Intel said that in Intel's fab, the Tunnel Falls is produced on 300mm silicon wafers, taking advantage of Intel's leading industrial manufacturing capabilities of transistors, such as extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV), as well as gate and contact layer processing technology. In the silicon spin qubit, the information (0Comp1) is encoded in the spin (top / bottom) of a single electron. Silicon spin qubits are essentially a single-electron transistor, so Intel can make it in a process similar to the standard CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) logic production line.
Intel believes that silicon spin qubits have an advantage over other qubit technologies because they can take advantage of similar production technologies for advanced transistors. The size of silicon spin qubits is similar to that of a transistor, about 50x50 nanometers, 1 million times smaller than other types of qubits, and is expected to be mass-produced faster. "Silicon may be the most promising platform for large-scale quantum computing," according to a paper in the journal Nature Electronics.
At the same time, with the advanced CMOS production line, Intel can improve yield and performance through its innovative process control technology. The yield of Tunnel Falls reaches 95%, which is close to the voltage uniformity (voltage uniformity) of CMOS logic process. In addition, Intel can achieve more than 24000 quantum dots per wafer. Tunnel Falls can form 4 to 12 qubits that can be isolated from each other or manipulated at the same time.
Next, Intel will continue to improve the performance of Tunnel Falls and integrate it with Intel Quantum Software Development Kit (SDK) into Intel's quantum computing stack. In addition, based on its experience in making Tunnel Falls, Intel has begun to develop the next generation of quantum chips, which is expected to be launched in 2024.
