Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, June 15, Microsoft launched Win32 application isolation technology at the Build conference in 2023, which is a sandboxie technology that uses AppContainers to improve application security. Today, the technology officially enters the public preview phase.

Win32 application isolation technology is a new security feature introduced by Microsoft in response to the increase of zero-day attacks in recent years. Zero-day attacks refer to attacks that make use of undisclosed vulnerabilities in software or systems, which can often bypass traditional protective measures. David Weston, vice president of Microsoft, wrote in the announcement that many zero-day attacks are now aimed at popular desktop applications, so the Win32 application isolation technology is to create a new default isolation standard in Windows clients.

Win32 application isolation technology is based on AppContainers (and other technologies). AppContainers is a technology specifically designed to encapsulate and restrict process execution to help ensure that processes run with limited permissions, often referred to as a low level of integrity. Unlike the existing Windows sandboxie features (CTOnews.com Note: Windows Sandbox and Microsoft Defender Application Guard) based on virtualization security, Win32 application isolation technology allows developers to use tools provided by Microsoft to add such security features to existing applications.

The goal of Win32 application isolation technology is to prevent Win32 (desktop) applications from running with the same security privileges as users. As a result, applications that use Win32 application isolation technology run at a lower privilege level, limiting the damage they can cause when attacked. In practice, this means that quarantined applications may need to request users from time to time to perform tasks that may be maliciously exploited, such as accessing documents or computer cameras. Therefore, it remains to be seen how this technology will affect the user experience.
