CTOnews.com, June 15 (Xinhua) Microsoft's planned $69 billion acquisition of game maker Activision Blizzard, such as call of Duty, has been legally challenged by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). FTC believes that the deal will allow Microsoft's game console Xbox to monopolize Activision Blizzard's games and have an unfair impact on competitors such as Nintendo and Sony.

To block the deal, FTC filed a lawsuit in federal court for the Northern District of California, asking the court to order a temporary ban on Microsoft and Activision Blizzard from completing the deal until an administrative judge at FTC finishes the case. The court has scheduled evidence hearings from June 22 to 23 and temporarily barred both parties from completing the transaction, while the administrative trial of FTC is expected to begin on August 2.

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard opposed FTC's lawsuit and asked the court to speed up the trial. They point out that under the agreement between the two sides, the deal must be completed by July 18, or Microsoft will have to pay $3 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 21.48 billion yuan) in liquidated damages. They argued that the FTC trial was too slow to make a decision within the time limit and that if the court issued a temporary injunction, it would be tantamount to terminating the transaction.

At present, the Federal Court of the Northern District of California has scheduled an evidence hearing from June 22 to 23 and temporarily banned both parties from completing the transaction. Another judge will be in charge of the hearing and will decide whether to grant a temporary injunction to FTC.

Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard has been approved by the European Union, but the British competition regulator opposed the deal in April.
