The European Union's antitrust regulator issued a "statement of dissent" to Google today, accusing Google of anti-competitive behavior in its digital advertising business.

The antitrust case, filed by the European Commission, the administrative arm of the 27-nation European Union, marks the fourth time in recent years that Google has been accused of violating European antitrust laws. In this context, the EU accuses Google of abusing its control over buying and selling online advertising.

The EU has previously launched an antitrust investigation into Google's online advertising business because Google collects advertising data, sells advertising space and acts as an online advertising intermediary, which exists in almost all aspects of the online advertising supply chain. It makes it difficult for competitors in online advertising services to compete fairly.

The EU believes that Google abused its dominant position to favor its own advertising trading platform, and its "deliberate" actions may have deprived competitors of opportunities. The European Union says the preliminary view is that only mandatory divestiture can solve the competition problem.

"Google exists at almost all levels of the so-called advertising technology supply chain," Margrethe Vestager, executive vice president of the European Commission in charge of digital and competition policy, said in a statement. "We are concerned that Google may use its market position to support its own intermediary services." this may hurt not only Google's competitors, but also publishers. It also increases the cost of advertisers.
