According to the code search announcement on AOSP's official website, AOSP's dialer and messaging apps (commonly known as phone and SMS apps in China) are no longer supported, saying that "this project will be removed from the source list at some point in the future."

The announcement means that Android ROM packages built through AOSP will not be pre-installed with dialers and messaging apps, meaning that basic phone and texting functions will need to download App on their own in the near future.

This is fine for major mobile phone manufacturers, after all, their customized systems do not use native dialers and messaging applications, but it is another hassle for individual ROM developers / users.

AOSP is meant to be an "Android open source project", but as open source content continues to be lost and Google puts more and more things into its own framework, Android seems to be losing its source.
