CTOnews.com, June 14 (Xinhua)-- Google's Pixel Watch is the company's first smartwatch, which has a special function: fall detection. In the event of a heavy fall, the watch asks the user if they need medical assistance and automatically makes emergency calls. Google details the work behind how to develop this feature in its Keyword blog.

Paras Unadkat, the head of Google's product, said that to understand what a "heavy fall" is, you need to collect a lot of data and train artificial intelligence models to distinguish different types of exercise patterns. To that end, Google has sought help from universities and laboratories that are already studying falls, set up devices to simulate falls and observe how people react when they are out of balance. Google also uses computer vision to try to visualize different types of falls.

In addition, Google also takes into account physical factors, such as different human body lengths and shapes. In order to better train the sensors inside the watch, Google also hired stuntmen to actually fall to the ground. There are many tiny sensors inside the watch, which can not only sense the user's movement, but also monitor the user's heart rate, steps and sleep. These sensors can identify the typical response of the human body in the event of a heavy fall.

Google said that during the development process, a large number of tests have been carried out to ensure that the watch does not misjudge the user's daily activities as an emergency. For example, watches can keep "calm" in more intense activities such as jumping, swimming and doing push-ups, identifying these as regular exercises.

The final step is to enable users to get help quickly. Google said it had been testing its fall detection function for more than a year before the official launch of Pixel Watch, involving hundreds of people. Google has also worked with the emergency community to test the quality of calls when the watch makes automatic calls to ensure that the voice is clear and informative.

Pixel Watch was launched last fall and did not get the fall detection feature until late February. After a heavy fall, the watch displays two options: "I'm hurt & I need help" and "I'm fine". If the user has a Wi-Fi version of the watch, you need to be within the range of Bluetooth connection to the phone to contact the emergency service.

CTOnews.com noted that in addition to fall detection, Pixel Watch added other health and safety features in the latest June 2023 update, including the ability to enable SpO2 sensors to monitor users' blood oxygen levels.
