IOS 17 Beta does not support app side loading, but Apple executives suggest they may eventually comply with EU rules

CTOnews.com, June 14 (Xinhua)-- Apple has received antitrust charges from governments around the world, especially the European Union, because App Store and iOS do not allow users to install apps from other sources.

Last year it was reported that Apple's iOS 17 system under development will allow users to side-load the iOS for the first time, meaning that users can install applications from any source. But Apple didn't mention this feature at this year's WWDC developer conference, and there was no side feature in the first beta version of iOS 17. Will Apple abandon this plan?

Craig Federighi, Apple's vice president of software engineering, directly led the project in response to EU regulatory requirements, Bloomberg reported last year. The EU believes that Apple charges developers up to 30 per cent commission through App Store, limiting market competition and consumer choice. Apple believes that App Store is an important mechanism to ensure the security and quality of iOS, and side loading will bring security risks and malware threats.

However, after the WWDC conference, Craig Federighi gave an interview to the well-known blogger John Gruber and revealed some information. "We want to make sure that what we are doing is good for our customers," he said, and Apple is discussing compliance "in cooperation with the European Union". Although he did not specify that the iOS 17 would have a side function, he strongly hinted that Apple would eventually offer this option to meet EU requirements.

If iOS does support side loading, this is undoubtedly a major change. But at the same time, Apple will try its best to keep this feature unnoticed by most users. After all, App Store is one of Apple's important sources of revenue. If the rumors are true, the side-loading feature will only be available in countries that are forced to allow it.

CTOnews.com previously reported that the first beta version of iOS 17 is now available to developers. Apple said the public beta version will be launched this summer and the official version is expected to be released this autumn.
