June 14 (Xinhua)-- Chip giant AMD announced on Tuesday local time that it will increase production of its new artificial intelligence chip MI300X in the fourth quarter to challenge market leader Nvidia. Meanwhile, Meta is using AMD's cloud chip to support a new artificial intelligence strategy.

Lisa Su, chief executive of AMD, said at a press conference in San Francisco that the MI300X chip had 192 GB of memory, more than all Nvidia's current chips. For processing ChatGPT and other large AI systems, memory is the key performance index to measure the chip.

Su Zifeng said: "there is no doubt that artificial intelligence will become a key driver of chip consumption in the foreseeable future." Customers will receive sample chips in the third quarter and production will increase by the end of the year, she added.

Su Zifeng also highlighted a system that integrates eight MI300X chips into a single computer to compete with similar products from Nvidia.

AMD also revealed that it has begun shipping large quantities of general-purpose CPU chips called "Bergamo" to Meta, the parent company of Facebook.

Alexis Blake Bjorin (Alexis Black Bjorlin), a senior executive at Meta computing infrastructure, also confirmed that the company did use Bergamo chips. The chip is part of AMD's data center business and is designed to meet the needs of cloud computing service providers and other large chip buyers.

However, it is not easy to challenge Nvidia's dominance because it has few strong competitors. While Intel competes with several startups such as Cerebras Systems and SambaNova Systems, Nvidia's biggest sales threat so far is the internal chip business of Google and Amazon's cloud computing division, both of which rent out their custom chips to outside developers.

Nvidia's leadership comes not only from its chips, but also from the software tools provided to artificial intelligence researchers for more than a decade and learning to predict what support they need in chips that take years to design. AMD updated its ROCM software on Tuesday, which competes with Nvidia's Cuda software platform.

Anshel Sag, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said: "even if AMD is competitive in terms of hardware performance, people still do not believe that its software solutions can compete with Nvidia."

Soumith Chintala, vice president of Meta, has helped develop open source artificial intelligence software. In a recent speech, he said he worked closely with AMD to make it easier for AI developers to use free tools and to shift the "single lead supplier" of AI chips to other companies, such as AMD.

Chintala added: "it's easy to switch from one platform to another, but you don't actually have to do that much work. In many cases, almost no work is needed."

Nvidia's shares have soared 170 per cent so far this year and account for 80 to 95 per cent of the artificial intelligence computing market, according to analysts. Nvidia shares closed 3.9 per cent higher at $410.22 on Tuesday, becoming the first chipmaker to close at more than $1,000bn.

By contrast, although AMD released the latest developments in its artificial intelligence strategy, it failed to impress investors, with the stock closing down 3.6 per cent on the day. Still, AMD shares have doubled since the start of the year and hit a 16-month high earlier in the day, driven by optimism about the company's investment in artificial intelligence.
