CTOnews.com, June 14, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk (Elon Musk) said on Twitter today that the company plans to conduct the second orbital test flight of a starship rocket within six to eight weeks (between the end of July and mid-August).

The starship is a giant rocket being developed by SpaceX to send humans to Mars. SpaceX recently began testing a full-size prototype of the rocket, which is nearly 400ft tall. SpaceX's near-term goal is to get the starship into full Earth orbit before trying to launch it to destinations such as the moon.

SpaceX conducted its first orbital test flight of a starship from its interstellar base (Starbase) in Boca Chica, Texas, on April 20. The giant rocket successfully lifted off and flew to an altitude of about 20 miles, but then exploded. The launch caused damage to the rocket launch pad, and debris and dust from the explosion flew miles away, triggering an "accident investigation" by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Musk said the starship's first orbital test flight was successful and said the SpaceX team had "learned a lot from it" and was ready for "the next test flight in a few months' time." In May, SpaceX submitted an application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a prototype starship into Earth orbit from Bokacchka within six months from June 15 to December 15. SpaceX needs a "temporary special authorization" from FCC and a rocket launch license issued by FAA to launch a prototype starship.
