According to news in the morning of June 13, Beijing time, American electric vehicle charging companies are cautiously treating Tesla charging technology as the main standard in the United States. A few days ago, Ford and General Motors said they would adopt Tesla's charging technology, but there were still questions about how to achieve interoperability between charging standards.
Tesla, Ford and GM together account for more than 60 per cent of the US electric vehicle market. The agreement reached by the companies could make Tesla's charging technology, the North American charging Standard (NACS), the main car charging standard in the United States. Tesla's shares rose 2.2 per cent on Monday.
The partnership agreement also means that companies including ChargePoint, EVgo and Blink Charging will face the risk of losing customers if they only provide CCS charging systems. CCS is a charging standard supported by the US government, which competes with NACS.
Electric vehicle charging stations that provide Tesla charging ports are eligible to share multibillion-dollar US federal subsidies as long as they also support the CCS interface, the White House said on Friday. The White House's goal is to promote the deployment of hundreds of thousands of charging piles, which it sees as an integral part of promoting the popularity of electric vehicles.
ABB E-mobility North America, a subsidiary of Swiss electrical giant ABB and a maker of charging piles, will also offer a choice of charging interfaces for NACS, which is currently designing and testing related products.
Asaf Nagler (Asaf Nagler), vice president of external affairs, said: "We are seeing a great interest in integrating the NACS charging interface into our charging posts and devices. Customers are asking, 'when can we buy this product?' " But the last thing we want is to rush to find an imperfect solution. We still do not fully understand all the limitations of Tesla's charging pile itself. "
Schneider Electric USA is also providing hardware and software for charging electric vehicles. Since Ford and GM announced the decision, interest in integrating the NACS charging interface has been growing, said Ashley Horvat, a senior executive at the company.
Blink Charging said on Monday that it would launch a new fast charging device with Tesla interface. The same goes for ChargePoint and Tritium DCFC. EVgo said it would integrate the NACS standard into its fast-charging network.
The shares of several car charging companies fell sharply on Friday after the three auto giants announced a charging partnership. But some companies recovered some of their losses on Monday after announcing that they would integrate NACS.
At present, the market is still worried about how the NACS and CCS standards will be smoothly compatible with each other, and whether promoting the two charging standards in the market at the same time will increase the cost for suppliers and users.
Neither the major automakers nor the US government has explained how interoperability between the two standards will be achieved, nor how fees will be settled.
"We don't quite know what the charging experience will be like in the future," said Aatish Patel, co-founder of XCharge North America, a maker of charging piles.
Manufacturers and operators of charging piles have noticed several concerns about interoperability: whether the Tesla supercharging station can provide suitable fast charging for high-voltage vehicles, and whether the design of Tesla charging cable is suitable for the charging interface of some cars.
Tesla's super charging station is deeply integrated with Tesla Automobile, and payment tools are also bundled with user accounts, so users can charge and pay seamlessly through Tesla app. Tesla also provided a power adapter that can charge cars at non-Tesla charging stations, and opened super charging stations for non-Tesla vehicles.
"if you don't have Tesla but want to use a supercharging station, it's not clear. How much Tesla technology do Ford, General Motors and other automakers want to introduce into their products to achieve seamless integration? or will they adopt a less seamless approach to achieve compatibility with larger charging networks?" Patel said.
A former Tesla employee working on the development of a supercharging station said that integrating the NACS charging standard will increase the cost and complexity in the short term, but given that Tesla can bring more vehicles and a better user experience, the government needs to support the standard.
The former Tesla employee currently works in a charging company. Tesla, which is developing CCS charging technology, is "re-evaluating" its strategy as a result of its partnership with GM.
Oleg Logvinov, president of CharIN North America, an industry group that promotes CCS charging standards, said: "Tesla's plan is not a standard yet. It still has a long way to go before it becomes a standard."
Logvinov is also the CEO of IoTecha, a supplier of rechargeable parts for electric vehicles. He says the CCS standard is worth supporting because it has worked with a number of suppliers for more than a decade.
