CTOnews.com, June 12 (Reuters)-Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, who is on a visit to Tokyo, Japan, said today that the trip around the world made him "very optimistic" about the prospects for global artificial intelligence (AI) coordination.

▲ Touyuan OpenAICTOnews.com previously reported that Altman had just completed a visit to EU leaders and legislators, and last week visited Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, India, South Korea and other countries and regions. After visiting Japan, he will also travel to Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.

In a conversation with Japanese university students today, Mr Altman said: "when I started this trip, I doubted whether it would be possible to bring about global co-operation in the field of AI in the short term to reduce the risk of human survival, but now at the end of the trip, I am very optimistic and I think we can achieve this kind of co-ordination."

Although Japan's manufacturing giants invest heavily in automation technology, Japan has long been seen as a laggard in AI services. However, Altman stressed in today's dialogue: "there is a long history of cooperation between humans and machines here."

Altman visited Japan in April and met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to inform him of his intention to set up an OpenAI office in Japan. In response, he said today that "all the conversations are going well", but he did not provide further details.
