The Xige section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway was opened to traffic in May 1984. After nearly 40 years of development, the Fuxing EMU with a speed of 160 kilometers per hour will be launched after the transformation, which will become another major leap of the plateau railway.

CTOnews.com inquiry public information learned that the Qinghai-Tibet Railway starts from Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, and goes west through Huangyuan and Haiyan, along the northern edge of Qinghai Lake, to Xitieshan via Delingha, and then to Golmud in the Qaidam Basin after paralleling with National Highway 315 in the south. From Golmud south to climb the Kunlun Mountains, through Hoh Xili, through Fenghuo, Tanggula Mountains, into Xizang's Amdo, Naqu, Dangxiong, and finally to Lhasa, the capital of Xizang Autonomous region.

At present, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway operates at speeds of 140 kilometers per hour (from Xining to Golmud) and 100 kilometers per hour (from Golmud to Lhasa). After the speed increase, the section from Xining to Golmud will reach the maximum design speed of 160 kilometers per hour, and the section from Golmud to Lhasa cannot increase speed again because the maximum design speed is only 100 kilometers per hour.
