Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, June 12 (Xinhua)-- Apple recently launched a new Mac Pro, a desktop computer that uses Apple's self-developed M2 chip, has up to 76 cores of GPU and the most 192GB of unified memory, greatly improved performance. However, unlike the previous Intel version of Mac Pro, the new Mac Pro is no longer compatible with graphics cards and does not allow users to upgrade their own memory. John Tenas, Apple's head of hardware engineering, spoke briefly about the issue in an interview with John Gruber on Daring Fireball last week, saying that Apple was not considering supporting extensible GPU for Apple Silicon.
Mr. Tenas explained to Gruber that Apple has built its architecture around shared memory models and optimizations, so he doesn't know how to introduce another GPU while ensuring system optimization. "that's not what we want to pursue." Tenas said.
CTOnews.com noted that another limitation of the new Mac Pro compared to Intel's Mac Pro is that users cannot upgrade memory because unified memory is welded to M2 Ultra chips. In addition, the Intel version of the Mac Pro can be configured with up to 1.5TB memory, while the Apple chip version of the Mac Pro has only the maximum memory of the 192GB.
Of course, the new Mac Pro and its unified architecture also have many advantages. For example, Apple says the new Mac Pro is three times faster than the Intel Mac Pro in some actual workflows, such as video transcoding and 3D simulation. When it comes to video processing, Apple says the performance of the new Mac Pro is equivalent to that of an Intel Mac Pro with seven Afterburner cards. For overall CPU performance, the basic model of the new Mac Pro starts at $6999 twice as fast as the 28-core Intel version of the Mac Pro, which starts at $12999.
The new Mac Pro is now taking orders and will go on sale in stores next Tuesday. If users do not need PCI Express expansion slots, they can consider buying Mac Studio or M2 Ultra chips, which are $3000 cheaper than Mac Pro.
