The national treasure "Bronze Statue of Copper Beast Kneeling and Sitting Man" unearthed in Sanxingdui has been successfully simulated and spliced.
The bronze statue of the man kneeling on the back of the bronze beast is 1.589 meters high and consists of three parts: upper, middle and lower. The bronze statue is composed of the kneeling statue of Tongdingzun unearthed in Pit No.3 in 2021, the edge of Tongzun mouth unearthed in Pit No.2 in 1986 and the bronze divine beast unearthed in Pit No.8 in 2022.
This cultural relic is incomplete, cracked, deformed and seriously corroded. Many fragments are missing. It is extremely difficult to repair it. Moreover, if they were to be put together, they could cause irreversible damage to cultural relics.
In March this year, Tencent SSV Digital Culture Laboratory, Tencent PCG ARC Lab, and Sichuan Province Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology cooperated to establish a joint team, using Tencent AI intelligent computing analysis, computer vision and other technologies, based on professional literature, started the first pilot cultural relic simulation splicing work.
On June 10, under the guidance of cultural relics archaeologists from the Archaeological Institute of Sichuan Province, the bronze statue of the bronze beast kneeling on its back has been successfully simulated and spliced. Through color reproduction and other technologies, you can feel the brilliance when it was cast thousands of years ago.
According to Tencent, AI intelligent calculation and analysis of the three-dimensional model of two cultural relics, extraction of the geometric feature information of the contact surface between the divine beast and the portrait, calculation of their feature similarity, can obtain the matching degree of splicing. Then do "orthopedic surgery," based on geometric analysis and deformation crack detection and orthopedic algorithms, can correct the deformation of the gods and portraits. Then, according to the symmetry completion algorithm of shape analysis, experts can be provided with a variety of conjecture references for the original appearance of cultural relics. Finally, through quantitative data and geometric stitching algorithm, multiple fragments are quickly spliced and compared to give a reasonable splicing mode. Then analyze the overall force and judge how to stand firm when the two "tall men" are together. It is not easy to "fall on the ground."
According to Tencent, in addition to simulation splicing work, they also use AI algorithms to assist in cultural relic disease analysis. According to the three-dimensional model, measure and calculate the crack length, cross-section data, overall posture and force situation of cultural relics, so that experts can have more quantitative support data when analyzing the deterioration disease of cultural relics. Next, their joint project team with the Sichuan Province Archaeological Institute will also develop AI-assisted archaeological line mapping tools. Because archaeological mapping now relies heavily on manual work, there are tens of thousands of cultural relics waiting to be drawn by cartographers in Sanxingdui, and there are very few cartographers in the industry, which will seriously affect the release progress of archaeological research reports. Through deep learning, AI can assist in quickly generating archaeological line drawings of all dimensions. It is planned to apply it to the unearthed cultural relics of Sanxingdui on a pilot basis, and then gradually open it to the whole industry in the future to help improve the efficiency of cultural relics archaeological research in China.
