Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, June 11, Reddit is a well-known social networking platform where users can post and comment on forums (subreddit) on a variety of topics. One of the most popular forums is r / iPhone, which focuses on Apple's mobile products. Recently, however, the forum announced that it would be closed because Reddit demanded exorbitant fees for third-party application developers.

One of Reddit's most popular third-party applications is Apollo, which is produced by developer Christian Selig. Apollo is loved by many users and forum moderators (moderator) because of its excellent design and functions. However, at the end of May this year, Selig revealed that Reddit required him to pay $20 million a year (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 143 million yuan) to continue to use Reddit's API. API is an application programming interface that allows third-party applications to exchange data and communicate with Reddit websites. Without API, third-party applications will not work properly.

Selig said the fee request was unreasonable and he could not afford it. He also pointed out that Reddit did not provide any reasonable explanation or room for negotiation. As a result, he had to shut down the Apollo app at the end of June. The news caused anger and dissatisfaction among many users and moderators who believed that Reddit was cracking down on third-party app developers and undermining the diversity and innovation of Reddit.

In protest against Reddit's actions, many forums decided to temporarily close their pages on June 12 as a sign of solidarity. More than 4000 forums have joined the protest so far, one of which is the r / iPhone forum.

The moderators of the r / iPhone forum posted an announcement on June 8 that they would close the forum for 48 hours starting on June 12. However, on June 9, Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit, held a question and answer session (AMA) on the website in an attempt to explain and defend his decision. However, this activity did not achieve good results, but made many people more disappointed and angry. Huffman slandered and attacked Selig during the event, and even told some lies. Selig proved that Huffman was lying through recording.

After seeing the performance of Huffman, the moderator of r / iPhone forum decided to change his plan. They issued another announcement on June 11, saying that they would start closing the forum ahead of time and that there would be no time limit. "We will privatize r / iPhone (from restricted mode to private mode) until there is a reasonable solution," they said. " Private mode means that no one can see or access the forum except the moderator and specific users.

The moderator of the r / iPhone forum also said they were ready to be removed by Reddit. "We don't want to volunteer for a site that constantly deceives users, doesn't respect developers and moderators, or is led by a liar," they said. " They also thanked the users of the forum and hoped that Reddit would change direction and restore the normal use of API.

At present, Reddit has not made any formal response or change to the protest. Many users and moderators said that they will continue to follow the development of this incident, hoping to see a fair and reasonable result.
