According to Atbury, he designed a "big eye clip" for Office 97 in 1997, when Microsoft had to choose the most suitable one from 260 potential designs. Microsoft even hired psychologists from Stanford University to ask the public which character is the most trustworthy or humorous. Atterbury's design won out in the end, but it also caused resentment among some Microsoft employees and users.

Atterbury said he was embarrassed that many users thought the feature of the "big eye clip" was too simple and annoying. Microsoft later realized the problem and completely eliminated the "big eye clip" in Office 2007. Julie Larson-Julie Larson-Green, a former chief experience officer at Microsoft, revealed in 2016 that she decided to kill the "big eye clip" because it could only provide preset answers.

However, the "big eye clip" still has a certain charm in the hearts of some users. CTOnews.com noted that in 2021, Microsoft announced after a social media event that the "big eye clip" might be resurrected in the form of emoticons.

Atbury said that the "big eye clip" is a guy who only wants to help others, but sometimes it is too warm-hearted, which is a little cute and a little fragile. He said that the "big eye clip" also brought him some professional opportunities to continue his illustration work. "whether you like it or hate it, as long as you know who it is, I am valuable."
