CTOnews.com reported on June 10 that electric cars are environmentally friendly, but they take a long time to recharge and are not suitable for endurance races. Toyota offers an alternative, and its Gazoo Racing division recently unveiled a GR H2 Racing concept car, a racing car designed for the new hydrogen vehicle category in the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race.

Toyota did not disclose the specific parameters of the concept car, but its advantages are clear: it is a zero-emission car and can spend more time racing on the track rather than recharging.

Toyota did not say whether or when the GR H2 concept car would be put into the actual race, saying the machine was built for "future competition". However, Toyota may need to improve it before it can take it to Le Mans.

Toyota is no stranger to low-emission and zero-emission racing. The company has been using the hydrogen-powered Corolla in Japan's super-endurance series since 2021, and its GR010 hybrid supercar won the championship and runner-up in last year's Le Mans 24-hour endurance race, and the GR H2 concept car is an extension of Toyota's strategy.

CTOnews.com noted that the launch of the concept car comes at a delicate moment for Toyota, which is turning to electric vehicles and giving priority to hybrid and hydrogen vehicles after years of boycotting electric vehicles. At the same time, the new chief executive, Hiroji Sato, also wants to ensure that hydrogen remains a "viable option". The GR H2 concept car may be a hint of how Toyota can deal with this dilemma: the company can continue to use hydrogen energy in some areas, such as racing cars and trucks, while catering to the passenger car market's demand for electric vehicles such as the bZ4X and Lexus RZ.
