CTOnews.com, June 10 (Xinhua)-- Software giant Microsoft plans to buy game developer Activision Blizzard (Activision Blizzard) for $69 billion, but was vetoed by the British Competition and Market Authority (CMA). The agency believes the deal could hurt competition in the burgeoning cloud gaming market. Microsoft appealed the decision, and Activision Blizzard was allowed to participate in the appeal process to present its position to the Competition Appeals Court (Competition Appeal Tribunal), which is expected to hold an appeal hearing next month.

This is the biggest deal in the history of the gaming industry, and if rejected, it will deal a major blow to Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. Both companies expressed anger at the decision of Britain's anti-media regulator and questioned whether the UK remained open to technology companies. Microsoft lawyers accused CMA of being a global "outlier" at a preliminary hearing in May because other regulators, including the European Union Competition Commission (European Commission), had approved Activision Blizzard's acquisition. Brad Smith, Microsoft president, said earlier this week that the company wanted to address regulatory concerns about Activision Blizzard's acquisition, which he discussed with the UK chancellor on Tuesday.

Activision Blizzard is the maker of well-known games such as call of Duty, and Microsoft hopes to expand its influence in the game market and enhance its cloud gaming service Xbox Cloud Gaming by acquiring Activision Blizzard.
