The disk directory where the vCenter Server logs are located varies depending on the vCenter Server version and the platform to which the log is deployed:

? VCenter Server 5.x on Windows XP, 2000, 2003 and earlier:% ALLUSERSPROFILE%\ Application Data\ vmware\ VMware VirtualCenter\ Logs\

? VCenter Server 5.x on Windows Vista, 7, 2008 and earlier: C:\ ProgramData\ VMware\ VMware VirtualCenter\ Logs\

? VCenter Server Appliance 5.x: / var/log/vmware/vpx/

? VCenter Server Appliance 5.x UI:/var/log/vmware/vami

Note: if this service is running as a specific user, these logs may be located in that user's profile directory rather than in% ALLUSERSPROFILE%.

VCenter Server logs are grouped by component and purpose:

? The vpxd.log:vCenter Server master log, which contains all vSphere Client and WebServices connections, internal tasks and events, and communication with vCenter Server Agent (vpxa) on the managed ESXi/ESX host.

? Vpxd-profiler.log, profiler.log, and scoreboard.log: analytical metrics for operations performed in vCenter Server. These metrics are used by the VPX operator Dashboard (VOD), which can be accessed through the https://VC hostname or IP address / vod/index.html.

? Vpxd-alert.log: records non-critical information about the vpxd process.

? Cim-diag.log and vws.log: common information model monitoring information, including communication between vCenter Server and the CIM interface of the managed host.

? Drmdump\: actions proposed and performed by VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), grouped by DRS-enabled clusters managed by vCenter Server. These logs have been compressed.

? Ls.log: license service extended health report, vCenter Server connection log.

? The string dump used during the vimtool.log:vCenter Server installation, as well as the DNS hash information and the user name and output to create the JDBC.

? Stats.log: provides information about historical performance data collection for ESXi/ESX hosts

? Sms.log: storage Monitoring Service extended health report, vCenter Server connection log, vCenter Server database, and xDB for vCenter Inventory Service.

? Eam.log:ESX Agent monitors extended health reports, vCenter Server connection logs.

? Catalina.date.log and localhost.date.log: connection information and VMware Web management service status.

? Replication logs between the jointool.log:VMwareVCMSDS service and a single ADAM database object, internal tasks and events, and linked mode vCenter Server.

? More log files:

O manager.date.log

O host-manager.date.log

Note: as each log grows, a series of numbered component-nnn.log files are generated. On some platforms, rotation logs are compressed.

The vCenter Server log can be viewed from the following location:

? Connect to vSphere Client with vCenter Server version 4.0 and later:

Click Home > Administration > Syslog.

? Virtual Infrastructure Client connected to Virtual Center Server 2.5:

Click Administration > Syslog.

? In vSphere 5.1and5.5Web Client:

Click Home > Log browser, then click Select object now from the Log browser, select an ESXi host or vCenter Server object, and then click OK.

In certain cases, if the vCenter installation fails, a log file (with a name of the form "hs_err_pidXXXX") is created that contains the database password in plain text. An attacker who breaks into the vCenter Server could potentially steal this password and access the vCenter Database.
