CTOnews.com, June 8, according to the latest report released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, global passenger electric vehicle sales increased by 32% in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the same period last year. One out of every seven cars sold is electric vehicles.

The report points out that battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) accounted for 73% and 27% respectively in this quarter.

China remains the world's largest electric car market, with overall passenger car sales down 12 per cent, but electric vehicle sales up 29 per cent year-on-year.

In addition, the United States overtook Germany to become the world's second largest electric vehicle market in the first quarter of 2023, and electric vehicle sales surged more than 77% year-on-year.

Research analyst Abhik Mukherjee said that nearly 40 automakers, including BYD, Lulai, Xiaopeng, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Honda and Toyota, have cut their prices by as much as tens of thousands of dollars as a result of the price war.

The top 10 electric vehicles accounted for 37% of total passenger electric vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2023. Tesla's Model Y is still the best-selling model in the world, followed by Tesla's Model 3 and BYD's Song.

BYD ranked first with a market share of 21.10%, followed by Tesla (16.01%), Volkswagen (6.88%) and Geely (5.86%).

In the first quarter of 2023, Tesla's Model Y made remarkable achievements, becoming the best-selling passenger car model in the world, even surpassing traditional fuel vehicles.
