CTOnews.com, June 8 (Xinhua)-- Apple's newly launched Vision Pro, a headset for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), has attracted wide attention from the industry and consumers, who are focused on whether it is comfortable to wear such devices for a long time.
Joana Joanna Stern, a digital reviewer at the Wall Street Journal, experienced the device and shared her first impressions in the video. She praised the function and appearance of Vision Pro, but she also mentioned a problem that worried her: after 30 minutes of wearing Vision Pro, she left obvious red marks on her forehead and nose.
"at the end of the demonstration, my nose tip and forehead began to feel the weight," Stern said in the video. " Then she said, "this is the picture I took off," and switched to the picture below.
If you look carefully, you can see the red marks on her forehead and nose. The video then enlarges the picture and adjusts the contrast and brightness, as shown below.
It looks uncomfortable, and it's not the only flaw in the experience that Stern mentioned, adding that during the 30-minute demonstration, she felt the weight of the device on her nose and forehead and felt a little nauseous.
About 1 minute 40 seconds she mentioned the red print on her face and Apple told Stern that any discomfort she encountered while wearing the Vision Pro could be due to the fact that they had only a limited size of the "light seal" at the scene. These are the parts of the headset that are covered with cloth and are used to fit the device to your face. Stern said Apple told her there would be more options when the device went on sale early next year.
The comfort of long-term VR or AR headsets has been a concern for device manufacturers for years as they cram high-end technology and batteries into something that needs to be close to your face and keep it stable. This is why almost all headsets on the market use plastic as the main shell material, because it is lighter and reduces the pressure on the user's forehead and nose, but it looks cheap.
Apple's Vision Pro uses aluminum alloy and a stylish piece of curved glass, which looks prettier than the competition. But these materials also increase the total weight of the device, so Apple reduces the weight through a unique strapping design and the external battery of the device. According to some reviewers, the weight of the head is about 1 pound (CTOnews.com Note: about 454g).
It also shows that even Apple has to make a tradeoff between design and comfort. In any case, the above experience only reflects Stern's personal experience, and when Vision Pro hits the market next year, we will be able to better understand the long-term comfort of Vision Pro.
