CTOnews.com June 8, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said at a conference hosted by the Economic Times of India that the company has not yet started training GPT-4 's successor, GPT-5.

"We still have a lot of work to do before we start training this model," Altman said. "We are working on new ideas that we think we need, but we are certainly not ready to start."

CTOnews.com previously reported that in March this year, more than 1100 people, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, signed an open letter calling on "all artificial intelligence laboratories to immediately suspend training of artificial intelligence systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months." Altman said at the time that the letter "ignores the technical details we need to pause", but admits that OpenAI has not yet started training GPT-5 and does not intend to do so "for the time being".

Altman on Wednesday again refuted some concerns about artificial intelligence, saying that the company had assessed the potential dangers through external audits, red team tests and security tests. "when we finished GPT-4, it took us more than six months to get ready to release it."

Earlier in the interview, Altman also said that OpenAI opposes regulation of smaller AI startups. "the only thing we call for regulation is ourselves and companies that are stronger than we are." Altman said.

Altman's trip to India is part of his active meeting and trust-building with lawmakers and industry participants around the world. During his meeting, Altman took the initiative to urge lawmakers to seriously consider the possible abuse and other negative effects of the popularity of artificial intelligence in order to formulate preventive measures to avoid any accidents.
