CTOnews.com June 7 news, y-cruncher is a very popular overseas classic benchmark testing tool, but also a calculation of pi, golden ratio and other mathematical constant software, has set a world record many times, and has been used by the industry for at least more than a decade (SuperPI is single-threaded Pi software, y-cruncher is multi-threaded).

Alexander Yee, author of y-cruncher, announced that the upcoming benchmark version will make significant improvements to AVX-512 hardware, especially the AMD Zen 4 kernel that supports AVX-512.

According to reports, this modernization project, which is based on algorithms based on modern processors, has been redesigned and written from scratch, involving more than 400000 pieces of code. this work began more than three years ago, but little progress has been made.

It is worth mentioning that because the new version cleans up outdated algorithms and useless code, some ancient processors will see a drop in runnings. for example, processors such as the original Core i7920, which was launched in 2008, lost their Hybrid NTT support and lost their running scores by 27%.

As can be seen from the figure, for AMD CPU with AVX-512, up to 20% algorithm acceleration can be achieved through the AVX-512 instruction set alone. It is believed that the new pi world record is already being calculated.

Intel CPU, including the upcoming Meteor Lake chip, will not be supported by AVX-512. CTOnews.com note: Intel Alder Lake CPU unexpectedly supports AVX-512 at the beginning of its release, but subsequent new batches have abandoned AVX-512 completely, while the 13th generation Raptor Lake does not support AVX-512 at all.

In 2021, the team of Graubinden University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland took 101 days and 9 hours to calculate pi to 62.8 trillion digits with y-cruncher, half the time compared with the previous world record, and Google announced a new record in 2022, using y-cruncher to push Pi to the 100 trillion mark.
