CTOnews.com, June 7, according to the Nippon Keizai Shimbun, the Vision Pro headline released by Apple yesterday may create new sales space for Sony and other Asian suppliers, but it depends on how the device performs in the disappointing VR market for years.

In a report released last month, Goldman Sachs said Vision Pro may have used polymer optical resins from Sony's OLED micro-displays and Mitsubishi Gas Chemistry for precision lenses. In addition, TSMC, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, may be responsible for supplying chips for the equipment.

So far, Sony and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical have declined to comment on their supply chain relationship with Apple.

Apple has previously said it has nearly 1000 suppliers in Japan, including Sony, Murata Studio, Kyocera and Nippon Electric. In 2022, Apple announced that it had spent more than $100 billion on the Japanese supply chain since 2018 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 712 billion yuan).

However, the overall market for VR devices is still very small. DSCC, a US research company, reported in May that sales of monitors for VR and related uses this year will grow 18 per cent year-on-year to 16 million units. By contrast, global smartphone shipments are likely to exceed 1 billion this year.

DSCC also said sales of VR devices have been disappointing in recent years, and Apple's Vision Pro sales are likely to be small at first.

Analysts believe that content will be the key to stimulating VR hardware demand. At present, VR and AR technologies are mainly used in games and some commercial design applications, which limits their scope of application. An executive at a large Japanese electronic components maker claimed: "in this world, the success of a product depends not only on hardware, but also on software. But until the product goes on sale, you can't tell whether it can be sold."
