CTOnews.com, June 6 (Xinhua) Steam is one of the largest video game platforms in the world, with more than 130 million active users per month. According to the latest hardware and software survey released by Steam in May 2023, the user share of Linux system on Steam reached 1.47%, the highest level in nearly six years. By contrast, the user share of the macOS system is 2.39%, while the Windows system still has an absolute advantage of 96.14%.

Linux is an open source operating system with many different distributions that can be customized according to users' preferences and needs. CTOnews.com noted that the most popular distribution for users who use Linux to play games on Steam is SteamOS Holo, which accounts for 25.32% of the total, an increase of 2.55% over the previous month. Other popular distributions include Arch Linux, Ubuntu, Freedesktop.org SDK, Manjaro Linux, Linux Mint, and Poppers operating system.

The user share of Linux system on Steam has reached its highest level in many years, mainly due to the launch of the Steam Deck handset. The Steam Deck is a Nintendo Switch-like device developed and sold by Steam that runs almost all games on the Steam and uses a Linux-based SteamOS Holo system.

Steam Deck not only brings more users and attention to the Linux system, but also provides more motivation and opportunities for game developers to transplant their works to the Linux platform, so as to expand their own market and audience.
