Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com June 6, Reddit is a well-known overseas social news site, users can post and comment on a variety of topics in different subreddit sections. However, Reddit recently announced that it will charge high API usage fees for some third-party applications, which means that some popular third-party applications will no longer be able to operate, a move that has aroused strong opposition from users and developers.
Last week, it emerged that Reddit would charge up to $20 million a year for the operation of a popular iOS exclusive Reddit app called Apollo. (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 142 million yuan). After that, Apollo developers and other Reddit app developers came forward and said that if these charges become a reality, they may need to shut down the app.
In protest against Reddit's policy, some subsections with tens of millions of users, such as r / Aww and r / Pics, announced that they would be "offline" (go dark) on June 12, meaning that services would be suspended for at least 48 hours, unless Reddit cancels or modifies its proposed policy. It is understood that hundreds of sub-sections have joined the protest.
Android Authority contacted Reddit about the matter and received five brief statements responding to some of the concerns of the community. Reddit said that the purpose of charging API usage fees is to fairly cover the huge data and server costs it bears, as well as to protect users and data security. Reddit also pointed out that the efficiency and profit model of third-party applications are also factors affecting API royalties, and not all third-party applications need to pay. In addition, Reddit also promises free API access to moderator tools and robots.
However, these statements did not quell the dissatisfaction of users and developers. They believe that the API fee proposed by Reddit far exceeds its own costs and benefits and will deprive them of their freedom to browse Reddit using third-party apps. They also question how Reddit keeps users and data secure, and point out that the tools and experiences provided by Reddit itself are not perfect.
At present, Reddit has not made a formal response to the protest.
