The moon is also a common subject in photography. There is a full moon these days, and the moon is very round on the 16th and 17th of the lunar calendar. Today, I would like to share with you how to use the stack sharpening method to make the moon photos clearer!

Because there is a thick atmosphere between us and the moon, atmospheric turbulence will affect the clarity of the moon, so take pictures of the moon directly with ordinary cameras and lenses, and the pictures often look like this.

In order to make the photos clearer, we need to use stack technology, its principle is to take multiple photos, select the best part of each photo to combine into a new photo can effectively remove noise and unstable interference elements, and improve the image quality.

After the picture quality has been improved, it needs to be further sharpened, because the picture quality is better, so the sharpening strength can be very strong, so you don't have to worry about noise and rough edges.

In the early shooting, according to the conventional method of shooting the moon, the camera was fixed on a tripod to take a number of photos in succession. The stack change of 6-9 photos is the most obvious, the more the number of photos, the better the effect, but with the increase of the number of photos, the change of the effect gradually slows down. For example, from 2 to 10, the change is particularly big, from 10 to 20, the change is much smaller, from 20 to 30, the change is even less. Some people will take 50 or 60 pictures in pursuit of the ultimate picture quality, which will test the performance of the computer. I chose 16 photos.

Stack noise reduction first needs to align the image, the moon is constantly moving in the air. In ps, click File-script-load the file on the stack-browse, select all the photos, and make sure. Then select all layers and click Edit-automatically align layers. The automatic alignment of ps does not work very well. If it fails, we can change the layer blending mode to difference or subtraction, move the layer to align manually (all black), and finally change the blending mode to normal.

Select all layers, right-click, convert to Smart objects, and then click layer-Smart object-Stack Mode-Intermediate value.

The following picture shows the effect after the stack of 16 photos, but it doesn't change much compared with the original image. The main function of the stack is noise reduction, and can not increase the clarity, and then we need to sharpen in order to effectively improve the clarity.

Sharpening I added sharpness and sharpening values in the camera RAW filter, increased the haze removal value, then continued to sharpen with ps's USM sharpening filter, and then pulled an S-shaped curve to improve the contrast.

In addition, software such as Registax6 that specializes in astronomical photography can be used for post-stack and sharpening, setting parameters, the software will automatically align and stack noise reduction, and then sharpen to improve clarity. The whole operation process will be simpler and the photo quality will be better.
