On Monday, June 6, Disney announced a partnership with Apple on the new Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Earlier on the same day, Apple announced the Apple Vision Pro, a $3499 mixed-reality headset, at its 2023 World Developers Conference (WWDC23).

Disney CEO Bob Iger said at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference: "We're always looking for new ways to entertain and inspire our fans, combining extraordinary creativity with groundbreaking technology to create truly extraordinary experiences. We believe Vision Pro is a revolutionary platform that can help us realize this vision. "

Iger said he had tried out Apple's headset and was impressed by the "deeply personal experience" it could create, which could bring Disney fans "closer to their favorite characters."

Disney +, Disney's streaming service, will launch alongside Vision Pro, he added, and Apple says it will start shipping "early next year." The immersive headset allows people to watch movies and TV on giant virtual screens in environments such as space, or participate directly in activities such as underwater trips, both of which Eagle demonstrated Monday. It will also support 3D, just like Meta's Quest headset.

Iger showed how VR can change the way fans watch sports, bringing them to the side of the field and having them change angles.

For Iger, being able to really build something new, rather than cut Disney's business, could be a welcome change. Iger returned to Disney as CEO last November at a time when the company and the entire media industry were struggling.

Disney has cut 7000 jobs in three rounds of layoffs in recent months, with the latest round starting at the end of May bringing the total to 2500. The layoffs disband the company's Meta-Universe team, which was started by former CEO Bob Chapek and led by longtime Disney executive Mike White.

In a clash with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Mr. Iger canceled plans to invest $1 billion in new parks in the state. He even pulled dozens of shows and movies from Disney + and Hulu, which is expected to result in a $1.5 billion writedown in the second quarter.

These moves may all be necessary given the economic headwinds, but they will certainly be counterproductive to the team that spent decades building the Disney empire by acquiring Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, expanding theme parks, and more.

While a partnership with Apple is good news for both Eagle and Disney, it's worth noting that Apple Vision Pro still looks like a niche product, at least for a while. First, it will cost $3499. Meta's upcoming Quest 3, by comparison, costs just $499. And VR hasn't made significant headway for any company yet.

But if Vision Pro is a "revolutionary platform," as iger predicts, disney will reap rich rewards.
