CTOnews.com, June 6 (Xinhua)-- Tokyo-based IT company Carelogy has launched a web app that uses artificial intelligence to detect whether cats feel pain from injury or illness, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

Due to physical structure, it is usually difficult for people to judge whether their cat is in pain according to their facial expressions or body movements. In some cases, when owners notice, the cat's pain is already so severe that it may even miss the best time for treatment.

The company, in partnership with Japanese universities, has collected about 6000 photos of cat faces. According to the method proposed by researchers at the University of Montreal in Canada, veterinarians scored five items, including the tilt of cats' ears, the way they opened their eyes, and the state of their beards to determine whether they felt pain. Through in-depth study of these judgments, AI can determine whether a cat is in pain with more than 90% accuracy.

The app is already available for free on the company's website, and users can quickly get the results by uploading photos of cats to the web page. The company CEO said that in the future, the company will try to promote paid service by improving the number and quality of users of the product.
