CTOnews.com, June 6 (Xinhua) according to the latest data released by market research firm Canalys, shipments of personal computers (including desktops, laptops and tablets) in India fell 35% year-on-year to 3.9 million in the first quarter of 2023. Shipments in the quarter are still higher than before the outbreak, 47% higher than in the first quarter of 2019.

Of this total, notebook shipments were 2.1 million, down 41 per cent from the same period last year; desktop shipments were 859000, down 7 per cent; and tablet shipments were 987000, down 37 per cent from the same period last year.

Shipments in both the consumer and commercial markets fell to 34 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, while shipments in the education sector fell by 45 per cent. Shipments of most computer makers (excluding tablets) in India fell sharply in double digits in the first quarter of 2023, with a focus on inventory reduction.

Although Hewlett-Packard's shipments fell by 30%, it remained the market leader with a 34% market share. Dell was the runner-up by a narrow margin, but ranked first among the top five with a 41% drop in shipments.

Lenovo followed closely in third place, with shipments falling 38 per cent. Acer ranked fourth with a relatively small decline of 10 per cent because of its participation in government tenders and strong desktop shipments, while Asustek ranked in the top five, with shipments down 27 per cent.

Shipments of tablets in India fell below a million units for the first time in eight quarters.

CTOnews.com note: Samsung regained its absolute lead with a 32% market share in the first quarter of 2023, despite losing the title to Apple during the holiday season. The brand will participate in education bidding projects this year, and future shipments are expected to continue to increase.

Apple's shipments, the runner-up, fell 16%, a relatively small drop. Although Lenovo ranks third in the tablet market, shipments plummeted 65 per cent due to a sharp drop in demand for its tablets in the consumer and commercial markets. Realme and Acer ranked fourth and fifth respectively.
