JF-22 ultra-high-speed wind tunnel is regarded as the most advanced world-to-earth round-trip system in the world at present. The National Natural Science Foundation of China organized the acceptance meeting of the national major scientific research instrument development project "detonation driven ultra-high enthalpy shock tunnel" in Huairou Park of the Institute of Mechanics.

The acceptance experts unanimously agreed to pass the acceptance and evaluated that the wind tunnel is in the international leading level in terms of comprehensive performance indexes such as effective test time, total temperature, total pressure and nozzle flow field size.

Jiang Zonglin, a researcher at the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and head of the Huairou shock tunnel project, has previously said that the goal of the JF-22 wind tunnel is to power the heaven-earth round-trip system, which, if successful, can reduce satellite and spacecraft launch costs by 90 per cent.

The JF-22 ultra-high speed wind tunnel project is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and undertaken by the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project was officially launched in 2018 with a development cycle of 5 years. Officials also pointed out that the wind tunnel is a super-large experimental instrument in the field of hypersonic and ultra-high speed, with a total length of 167m, a nozzle outlet of 2.5m, an experimental chamber diameter of 4m and an experimental airflow velocity range of 3-10km/s. It can reveal the law of ultra-high-speed flow of complex media dominated by molecular dissociation, and can effectively support the research and development of space-to-earth transportation system and ultra-high-speed aircraft in our country.
