Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, June 5 (Xinhua) artificial intelligence led to the loss of nearly 4000 American jobs in creative, administrative and clerical areas in May, according to data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a US talent mobility consulting firm.

According to a report released by Challenger, Gray & Christmas on Thursday, local employers laid off more than 80,000 jobs in May, an increase of 20% over the previous month and nearly fourfold over the same period last year. Among them, artificial intelligence caused 3900 people to lose their jobs, accounting for about 5% of all unemployed people, making it the seventh largest cause of layoffs cited by employers in May.

The layoffs are due to the fact that companies spare no effort to use advanced artificial intelligence technology to automate a range of tasks, including creative work such as writing, as well as administrative and clerical work. The artificial intelligence industry is expected to grow to more than $1 trillion, driven by major technological advances that became apparent after the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT last fall, according to a report by Bloomberg analysts.

The Washington Post reported this week that two copywriters lost their livelihood because their employers (or clients) thought ChatGPT could do the job at a lower price. Some media, such as CNET, have laid off journalists and used artificial intelligence to write articles, and later had to correct plagiarism. Earlier this year, an eating disorders helpline used chat robots to replace unionized human workers, but recently it had to go offline because it gave people questionable diet advice.

CTOnews.com previously reported that in March, investment bank Goldman Sachs predicted in a report that artificial intelligence could eventually replace 300 million full-time jobs around the world and affect nearly 1/5 jobs, especially white-collar jobs that are generally considered unaffected by automation, such as administrative and legal professions.

But analysts point out that, like previous technologies that have replaced human workers, generative artificial intelligence will create new jobs, and this emerging industry is just in its infancy.
