Kali Linux 2023.2 was released within two and a half months of the 10th anniversary release of Kali Linux 2023.1, which introduced support for Kali Linux's flagship PipeWire multimedia backend, which has a lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

The Xfce version of Kali Linux also adds the extension GtkHash to the Thunar file manager to support quick calculation of the checksum of files. Several new hacking tools have been added in this release, including Cilium-cli for installing, managing, and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters, Cosign for container signing, Eksctl as the official CLI for Amazon EKS, and Evilginx as an independent broker-an intermediate attack framework for phishing login credentials and session cookie that allows two-factor authentication to be bypassed.

Other new tools include GoPhish, the open source phishing toolkit, Humble, a fast security-oriented HTTP header analyzer, Slim (toolkit) to shrink container images, Syft images and file systems to generate software bill of materials from containers, and Terraform to create, change, and improve infrastructure securely and predictably.

The list of new tools in Kali Linux 2023.2 continues to include eBPF-based security observability and runtime execution tools Tetragon; extensible, open source, and free security incident response platforms TheHive; WSGI-based generic and extensible WebDAV server Wsgidav; finds vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, secrets, SBOM tools in containers, Kubernetes, code repositories, clouds, etc.
