CTOnews.com June 4, Intel CEO Pat Kissinger has realized that in order to avoid being too far away from Nvidia and other competitors, they must act as soon as possible to escape the current "quagmire."
According to the Wall Street Journal, Kissinger said in an interview a few days ago that Intel has repeatedly delayed the launch of new chips compared with competitors such as Nvidia and AMD, disappointing potential customers. "We are not stuck in this quagmire without our own reasons. We have some serious problems in leadership, people, methods and other aspects that need to be addressed."
In his view, Intel's problems are largely due to the failure of the transformation of the way chips are made. Intel is famous for designing integrated circuits and making them in its own factories. Today, chip companies often specialize in either integrated circuit design or manufacturing, and Intel has not been able to win much of the business of making chips designed by other companies.
Kissinger's plan is to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new factories that will make semiconductors for other companies in addition to Intel's own chips.
The global chip market is expected to exceed $1 trillion by the end of the decade (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 7.09 trillion yuan). Kissinger said it was "imperative" to become one of the world's leading contract chip manufacturers.
Kissinger said he was confident Intel could deliver on his promise to achieve five chip technology advances in four years and would produce "the most advanced processors in the world" in the next few years. Kissinger also said he was confident Intel could become one of the two largest contract chipmakers in the world.
According to previous news, Intel will build a large fab (or chipmaker) in the eastern German city of Madeburg, and they also hope to receive a subsidy of 6.8 billion euros (CTOnews.com Note: about 51.816 billion yuan) from the Berlin authorities, which is Germany's largest foreign direct investment since World War II.
There has also been news that Intel wants subsidies to be raised to at least 10 billion euros, citing rising energy and construction costs. German officials say they can increase financial support, but only if Intel expands its investment.
Intel plans to set up a research laboratory in Seoul, South Korea, and expand its cooperation with Samsung and SK Hynix to promote the research and development of DRAM chips for data centers, according to South Korean media Koreaherald.
