After finishing the photo post-modification, will you choose to export the photo directly?
I don't know if you've paid attention to the photo export page, but there are actually many practical functions in it.
Today, let's take Lightroom as an example and see what its photo export page has that we haven't explored:
1. Needless to say, the export location is mainly the choice of the export photo storage location, we can operate according to personal preferences.
2. File naming Literally speaking, this is a very common function, but if we open the operation list, we can see that the system provides a lot of file naming methods, such as date-file name, file name-sequence number, etc., and also supports custom editing.
These file naming methods seem ordinary, but in fact they are very practical. We can classify and name them according to their own information, keep their date, number and other information, so as to facilitate subsequent search and view. For more important photos, we can use this function to name them in batches in a targeted manner to facilitate subsequent use.
3. Video Lightroom can also process video, simple color, light editing is OK, but of course not as complete as PR function, and for long video processing is not very convenient, simply understand this function can be.
4. File settings This is also a relatively important export function, including image format, color space, quality, file size limit four functions, we understand one by one:
(1) Image format is what format we want to save exported photos, including JPEG, PSD, TIFF, DNG, original format.
JPEG is the most commonly used image file format, it has the advantage of occupying a small space, but there will be a certain compression of photos;
PSD is a special format for Adobe Photoshop, which can not only save the image itself, but also save the editing information for subsequent modification, that is to say, we can save the file and continue to open it in PS at any time to continue modifying it; for important photos, or photos that need to be further modified in PS, we can save a PSD format as a backup;
TIFF is also a common image format, it is more complex but flexible, can support many different color systems, but also support high-quality output, suitable for printing;
DNG is a common storage format for raw data. Simply understood, it can convert photos taken by different cameras into a unified original data format to facilitate the sharing and preservation of photos.
In PS, there are PNG and other formats, here mainly talk about PNG format, which is a relatively common lossless compression format, support transparent background and high resolution.
So how do we choose when exporting photos? Everyone has different needs and habits, here is just for everyone's reference:
1. Ordinary photos that are only used for network sharing and have no special value can be exported to JPEG format. Although there is compression, they occupy a small space and are sufficient for network transmission and sharing.
2. Important photos that will be used later can be saved in PNG and TIFF formats, among which TIFF is more suitable for printing and printing. Saving these formats is not for convenient viewing and immediate use, but for avoiding compression and facilitating subsequent processing. The space they occupy is larger than JPEG.
3. DNG is not particularly common. If you want your photos to be processed on multiple platforms, such as Canon CR2 (raw format) edited on other restricted platforms, you can first store them in DNG format.
4. If there is enough disk space, it is best to be able to save raw photos directly.
(2) Color space includes sRGB, Adobe RGB, Display P3, Prophoto RGB, etc.
Here we mainly talk about the more common sRGB, Adobe RGB, Prophoto RGB, simply to understand, they are a kind of "color storage container," the specific size of the container is Prophoto RGB>Adobe RGB>sRGB.
Does this mean that we are better off using Prophoto RGB when exporting photos?
No, because most of the current network platforms are applicable to sRGB, such as various social platforms, if we use Adobe RGB or Prophoto RGB, photos will look strange instead;
Adobe RGB and Prophoto RGB are generally used for work processing, such as if you help some professional organizations take editing photos, they may explicitly require these two formats, or when you send photos to the print shop, they may only print electronic versions of these two formats.
So in short, sRGB is suitable for ordinary photography enthusiasts and some independent photographers, because our photos are mainly used on the network platform; need to connect professional customers, corporate photography, design practitioners need to use Adobe RGB and Prophoto RGB, and equipped with the corresponding processing tools, such as support for the format of the display.
(3) Quality and file size limits
Except for special needs, the default settings can be used.
5. Adjust the size of the picture Here, we can edit the length and width of the exported photo. We can use the specific data according to our personal needs. For example, if we want to send the exported photo directly to the circle of friends and avoid compression, we can set the shortest side to 1080.
6. Output sharpening includes screen, matte paper, highlight paper three options, we can choose according to the purpose of the photo literally, that is, the demand for electronic version of the photo on the screen, the demand for printing on the other two.
Sharpening amount has low, medium and high options. If you do not print paper, you can choose medium by default. If you need to print, you can choose high sharpening amount.
7. The photos taken by metadata not only have their own color and other information, but also save data such as shooting time, shooting equipment model, shooting parameters, etc. We can choose whether to save these information according to personal needs.
8. Adding watermarks Adding watermarks is also a more practical function, we can also add them according to personal needs, and we can also design simple watermarks ourselves.
9. Post-processing is the next operation after exporting photos. The default is no operation. Of course, it can also be linked with other software, such as opening them directly in PS or other software after exporting.
As professional late-stage software, Lr and Ps have many details but practical functions, which can improve our efficiency and experience to a certain extent.
