CTOnews.com, June 4 (Xinhua)-- researchers at Stanford University have developed an ultra-realistic self-healing material that can be used to make artificial skin for robots, giving the robot a semi-mechanical and half-living appearance and function similar to that of the Terminator movie. This material not only senses changes in temperature, pressure and current around it, but also automatically aligns and heals itself after damage, maintaining the integrity and functionality of the skin.

The researchers say they have for the first time implemented the technology of automatic alignment of multilayer thin film sensors during self-healing, a key step in imitating human skin. There are multiple layers of human skin, each of which can be correctly reassembled during healing. This technology can make the robot have a more humanized appearance and touch, and improve the efficiency and affinity of communicating with human beings.

To make the artificial skin, the researchers developed silicone and polypropylene glycol materials that stretch like human skin without tearing, while magnetic properties allow the skin to align itself.

This artificial skin is soft, stretchable, waterproof and self-healing. If pierced, cut or cut, each layer can heal selectively with itself and restore the overall function. When the temperature rises to 70 degrees Celsius, it can repair itself within 24 hours; at room temperature, it takes about a week.

The researchers say their next goal is to make thinner skin layers with different functions, such as layers that can sense changes in temperature or tension. CTOnews.com notes that with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, humanoid robots are getting more and more attention. for example, a Texas company is developing a "general-purpose robot" that can help families with daily tasks, while a start-up backed by OpenAI is committed to commercializing humanoid robots in the workplace.
