CTOnews.com June 2, the documentation Foundation completed the project selection of its LibreOffice open source office suite in Google programming Summer (GSoC) 2023, promising new features and improvements that users have long requested.

Future versions of LibreOffice will allow users to import and export APNG (CTOnews.com Note: animated PNG) images, an animation format that is backwards compatible with PNG images and supports more colors and partial transparency than GIF images. In addition, all major web browsers already support APNG.

Another new feature that users are looking for is to implement search fields in the options panel, making it easier to find settings to configure LibreOffice as needed. The search field will be implemented in the options dialog box under the tool.

Future versions of LibreOffice will also receive improved PGP / GPG encryption support. Currently, this feature is experimental in LibreOffice, but it will be improved to make it easier to find the correct key for encrypted documents, to add asynchronous queries to improve performance, and to achieve intelligent search, upgrade filtering, and so on.

Future versions of LibreOffice will come with a machine learning-based test selection method that can choose to run tests in a continuous integration chain to reduce test load, as well as C++ unit tests written for Writer's UNO API, derived from OpenOffice.org and written in Java.

These features will be implemented by different students during Google Summer of Code 2023 and are scheduled to be released in a future LibreOffice release. However, it is not expected to appear in the LibreOffice 7.6 release in mid-August 2023 and is expected to be available in 2024.
