CTOnews.com June 1, Microsoft announced today that Microsoft Mixed Reality Toolkit 3, based on open source, will be fully launched sometime in the third quarter of 2023.

In a blog post, Microsoft said its latest version of the MR application development kit uses the OpenXR standard, which means that developers using the new tool will be able to build applications that can run not only on Microsoft HoloLens devices, but also on other similar headers.

Microsoft Mixed Reality Toolkit 3 is also compatible with the popular game development engine Unity, its XR management system and XR interactive toolkit, so these tools will be more compatible with the new version of Unity.

The Microsoft Mixed Reality Toolkit 3 toolkit will include the following specific improvements:

Faster performance: developers can improve the performance of HoloLens 2 and resource-constrained mobile platforms.

Smaller memory footprint: by leveraging OpenXR, developers can better reduce the memory footprint of cross-platform applications.

Modern user interface: supports new Unity features such as Unity 3D Canvas, reducing the time it takes to code and put the application into production.

Microsoft also announced today that Azure Communication Services Calling SDK for Unity will release a public preview by the end of the second quarter of 2023. Microsoft said:

"developers can not only benefit from all the inherent features of ACS Calling SDK for UAP, but also take advantage of the Unity editor. This gives developers access to a visual interface, which significantly reduces the time required to create, design, and build HoloLens 2 applications."

In April, Microsoft released a free Windows 11 update for HoloLens 2, saying it was committed to updating HoloLens 2, but there was no word on whether the company planned to release its expensive MR device, HoloLens 3.
