CTOnews.com, June 1 (Xinhua)-- the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) yesterday released a draft that would require all passenger cars and light trucks to be equipped with automatic braking systems to avoid accidents.

NHTSA estimates that the proposal, if finally passed, will save at least 360 lives each year and reduce the number of injured by 24000. In addition, the automatic braking system will also significantly reduce property losses caused by rear-end collisions.

"Today, we take an important step forward to save lives and make our roads safer for all Americans," said Pete Buttigieg, US transportation secretary. "just as previous generations of life-saving innovations such as seat belts and airbags have helped improve safety, automatic braking systems will make us all safer on the road," Pitt said.

NHTSA recommends that all light vehicles be equipped with automatic brakes to ensure that they do not hit pedestrians at speeds of no more than 37 miles per hour. In addition, manufacturers need to ensure that new cars do not hit stationary or slow-moving vehicles at speeds of up to 62 miles per hour. If the new rule is finally passed, manufacturers will have to implement it in three years at the latest.

In fact, about 90% of new cars on sale in the United States already have automatic braking systems, but not all cars meet NHTSA standards. CTOnews.com reported in December that NHTSA had launched an investigation into GM's self-driving business, Cruise, for improperly slamming on the brakes.
