CTOnews.com, June 1, NixOS, a Linux distribution and a set of software packages that can be used on other Linux systems and macOS, today announced an update to 23.05 with new components and features.

NixOS 23.05, named "Stoat", comes six months after the release of NixOS 22.11 and comes with the long-supported Linux 6.1 LTS kernel family. The previous version uses the Linux 5.15 LTS kernel family, so users will see improved hardware support the next time they install NixOS or even an existing installation.

Another new feature of NixOS 23.05 is support for the latest GNOME 44 and KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS desktop environment series, which are used by default for the flagship version of NixOS in real-time environments and can be tried out before installing them. In addition, the Cinnamon 5.6 desktop environment is now available for installation.

This version also uses systemd 253.1 as the default init system. Developers recommend that users use nixos-rebuild boot and reboot instead of nixos-rebuild switch, because in rare cases, real-time system switching may fail.

Several new services have been added in NixOS 23.05 to provide users with a variety of new features, including the hyprland dynamic tiling Wayland synthesizer, the gmediarender headless UPnP / DLNA renderer, and the Budgie desktop environment.

In addition, a new-- specialisation option has been added to the nixos-rebuild tool to allow you to change the specialization of switch and test commands, the Python implementation has been updated with PEP 668 to provide better feedback to users when running pip install system-wide, the boot.bootspec.enable internal option is now enabled by default, and the libxcrypt password hash library is built without support for unmarked strong algorithms.

Finally, for those who want to install NixOS in elementary OS's Pantheon desktop environment, developers remind it that it now defaults to Mutter 43 and gnome-settings-daemon 43, and that all Pantheon-related packages are now tracking the latest elementary OS 7 updates.

NixOS 23.05 is now available for download from the official website (with an address attached to CTOnews.com). As a minimum version of GNOME, KDE Plasma, and for 64-bit, AArch64 (ARM64) and 32-bit architectures, this version will be supported until December 2023.
