CTOnews.com June 1, the Armbian community today released the Armbian 23.05 operating system (codenamed Suni) for ARM and RISC-V single board computers and other platforms.

Three months after the release of Armbian 23.02, Armbian 23.05 was first created on a fully refactored build framework and provides users with new features and updates from the Debian GNU / Linux community based on the upcoming Debian 12 "Bookworm" operating system family, such as the long-supported Linux 6.1LTS kernel family.

This version also brings support for the i3 tiled window manager, which is now Armbian's fourth officially supported graphics environment to update the Ubuntu-based desktop images of x86 computers by removing unnecessary "Ubuntu Advantage" services and removing web browsers in Snap format.

There are many other improvements to Armbian 23.05, such as updates to armbian-installer, armbian-config, and armbian-firstrun internal build tools to provide a smoother experience when installing and configuring Armbian, more streamlined cross-platform software packages and consistent choices for different underlying packages and desktops, and the latest security patches.

In terms of hardware, Armbian 23.05 added support for the latest memory chips on Banana Pi BPI-M5 single board computers, rebase for Raspberry Pi, Odroid M1, UEFI and mvebu edge kernels on Linux 6.2, added support for NanoPi R6S/ R6C open source mini-Internet of things gateway devices, rebase for Rockchip 32-bit edge kernel based on Linux 6.3, and enabled support for FriendlyElec NanoPi R4SE mini-routers.
