CTOnews.com, June 1 (Xinhua)-- Japan's PowerX has announced that it is planning to build a 140m-long "Battery Tanker X" battery tanker capable of carrying 241MW of renewable energy at sea.

PowerX also said that because Japan is surrounded by the deep sea and is prone to earthquakes, ship-based solutions can solve the problem of long downtime caused by submarine cable failure and maintenance, while reducing costs. " If four ships were deployed on a route from Hokkaido to Aomori prefecture, the cost of electricity transportation could be reduced to about $0.17 (1.21 yuan) per kilowatt-hour, which could be 44% lower than the average retail price of household electricity in Japan.

To ensure safety, the ship will be equipped with gas emission control and fire extinguishing mechanisms. However, considering the number of lithium batteries on the ship itself, if an accident occurs, it will still cause serious marine pollution.

On the surface, however, the plan is fraught with uncertainty, and with the gradual closure of the fossil fuel power plant in Hokkaido, the ideal may only stay on paper.

At the same time, the ship also has some limitations. At present, pure electric ships do not last long, so the ship is destined to sail only on short routes. According to data disclosed by PowerX, the maximum range of the ship is expected to be only 300km, roughly the distance between Shanghai and Nanjing.

CTOnews.com found that PowerX has several battery plants around the world, and it is clear that it is cheaper to build a large "mobile power" ship with its own supply chain than to build land and submarine cables.

At present, PowerX is setting up a new subsidiary called Ocean Grid Company to advance the construction of the ship. Now that the prototype design of the ship has been completed, the company will start building the Battery Tanker X in 2025 and plans to start field testing in Japan and internationally in 2026. So far, PowerX has raised more than $70 million and claims to have established partnerships with other companies to speed up shipbuilding.
