CTOnews.com June 1, the GNOME project today announced the full release of the GNOME 44.2 desktop environment, the second maintenance update of the GNOME 44 "Kuala Lumpur" desktop environment series.

More than a month after the release of GNOME 44.1, GNOME 44.2 added additional bug Bug fixes and improvements.

In GNOME 44.2, developers updated the GNOME package manager to improve support for Flatpak applications, check for updates when automatic updates are disabled, better handle multiple background jobs, prevent downloading rpm-ostree updates only when checking for updates, and reduce background resource consumption when the application is idle.

As part of this release, the Nautilus File Manager has been updated to version 44.2, fixing crashes when using extensible folders and other locations views, rubberband range behavior on list views, inconsistent search status, and tracker cursors that do not disappear.

The Epiphany (GNOME Web) Web browser has been updated to version 44.3, which improves the creation of Web applications, fixes storage access (intelligent tracking prevention) permission requests, resolves crashes when using bookmark pop-ups, and removes Purism metadata from appdata files.

GNOME Control Center 44.2 received a variety of minor accessibility fixes, including the ability to hide the entire "touchpad" tab in the mouse and touchpad panel when the touchpad cannot be disabled, the removal of automatic login line tooltips in the user panel when unlocked, and some minor updates to the network and appearance panel.

GNOME Map 44.2, which is also included in this update, now displays thumbnails of places with linked Wikipedia data entries and title images but not Wikipedia articles, and when there is a title, the correct rotation of the user's location marker is displayed whenever the map view rotates (geographic cues indicate movement).

GNOME 44.2 also comes with a newer version of GNOME Boxes virtualization software (version 44.2), which now retains the VM clone background operation and 3D acceleration configuration, saves manual configuration edits to CHANGES_DONE_HINT, improves pre-populating VM memory / storage resources, and fixes issues where shared folders do not appear in newly created VM.

GNOME 44.2 also brings improvements for GNOME Eye (CTOnews.com note: default image viewer), Evolution, GNOME remote Desktop, Orca, and other applications.

The GNOME project encourages all GNU / Linux distributions with GNOME 44 to upgrade to GNOME 44.2 (click here to download), which will soon enter the stable software repository of some of the most popular distributions, including Fedora Linux 38, Ubuntu 23.04, Arch Linux and openSUSE Tumbleweed.
