Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com Boeing Starliner's International Space Station crew flight test program, called Crew Flight Test (CFT), begins July 21 and will send NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station (ISS).
However, during a "review" conducted last Thursday (May 25), the company and NASA identified a number of "emerging issues" that need to be addressed before the first manned spaceflight test can be conducted, according to NASA.
NASA writes that the team will replace Starliner avionics bypass valves in the system that help dissipate heat. Such work is expected to take only a week and will not affect plans, they added.
In addition, engineers are evaluating questions about whether a tape used to protect some of Starliner's wires poses a flammability risk. NASA said Boeing and NASA teams are re-evaluating the efficiency of some of the take-over efforts in the Starliner parachute system "based on new data reviews in the ongoing design certification process."
Steve Stitch, NASA Commercial Crew Program Manager, said: "We are proceeding methodically with Starliner's first manned mission, taking full advantage of lessons learned, including Starliner flight testing and the agency's validation efforts. "
He added:"All anomalies exposed during Starliner's first test mission have been resolved. "In addition to closing work in progress, the team is still keeping a close eye on new technical issues as we complete certification for manned flight. "
CTOnews.com notes that the CFT mission was originally scheduled to launch in April, but NASA postponed it to July 21 in late March to accommodate further analysis of Starliner and its systems while avoiding too many people on the International Space Station.
NASA and Boeing have completed most of the preparatory work required for Starliner to prepare for CFT, NASA said. But they added that another extension was not impossible.
"Astronaut safety remains a top priority for NASA and its industry suppliers, and it's not uncommon for problems to arise during human spaceflight, especially during development," Stich said. "Our team is confident in our goal of getting the crew on Starliner as quickly as possible and safely. If we need to adjust our schedule in the future, we will certainly do so as before. Because we don't fly until we're fully prepared. "
