CTOnews.com, May 31 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- SK Hynix said on Tuesday that it has begun to verify its latest Gen 5 (1b) 10nm server DDR5 DRAM with Intel, which can be used later with Intel Xeon extensible platform server processors.

SK Hynix says its latest DDR5 DRAM can reach 6.4Gbps, and claims it is the fastest DDR5 chip on the market. The memory chipmaker also uses high-k metal gates on the chip, which reduces power consumption by 20 per cent compared to Gen 4 (1a).

TrendForce research shows that DRAM industry revenue in the first quarter of this year was about $9.66 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 68.393 billion yuan), down 21.2% from the previous quarter, and has been down for three more quarters.

In terms of revenue, the revenue of the three original factories all declined. SK Hynix shipments and ASP fell more than 15% in the first quarter, with revenue declining by 31.7%, the highest, at about $2.31 billion.

Analysts pointed out that due to the rapid decline in ASP, Q1 operating margins of the three original factories changed from positive to negative, while DRAM prices continued to decline, and operating margins remained at a loss in the second quarter. In terms of capacity planning, the three original factories have all started to reduce production, with Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix falling to 77%, 74% and 82% respectively in the second quarter.

If SK Hynix 1b DRAM memory is shipped smoothly, it is bound to save its performance in the second half of the year.
